Welcome is not the same as tolerance
Tolerance is something done to you. It means your presence has been considered and permitted, and that whoever granted the permission could revisit it later. Welcome is not a warmer degree of the same thing. It is a different thing. Welcome means nobody is doing you a favor by making room, because the room was already partly yours. That distinction is not a matter of wording, and you can usually feel which one you have walked into within the first ten minutes.
Plenty of people know the second version well. The community that says everyone is welcome, and means everyone may sit down. You can attend. You can give. You can be spoken of warmly. But there is a line somewhere, unwritten, that you do not cross, and nobody will name it for you. You find it by walking into it: the role you are quietly never asked to fill, the blessing that is offered to others, the small pause before your partner’s name. Being received on paper and withheld from in practice is its own particular injury, and part of what makes it heavy is how hard it is to point at without being told you imagined it.
Here, welcome does not come with a condition attached, including the condition other rooms placed on you. Not on probation. Not as an exception a community congratulates itself for making. You are simply one of the people who gathers, the same as anyone else who walks in.
Keeping the door open
The Pagan Church of Christ is small and new, founded in 2026, and it owns no building. Gatherings happen in rented or borrowed rooms, and the time and place are sent out by email rather than posted. That last detail matters more than it may sound: not everyone is out to everyone, and no one should have to be in order to come in.
An open door has an ordinary cost, counted in rent for the space and in the slow work of caring for the people who show up. Giving is what covers it, and steady monthly giving covers it best, because a room has to be paid for whether or not it was a generous month. What your gift buys is specific and unglamorous: a known day, a room, and no quiet line drawn through the middle of it.
