The particular loneliness of not belonging
There is a kind of loneliness that has nothing to do with being by yourself. You can hold something steady and real inside you, a sense that the world is more than it appears, that the turning of the year means something, that the prayers your grandparents said were not nothing, and still have nowhere to carry it. Friends change the subject. The tradition you were raised in wants a version of you that you can no longer honestly be. So the thing stays private, and private is a hard place to keep anything alive.
“Spiritual but not religious” gets talked about as a preference. For a lot of people it is closer to a description of an absence. It names what you believe and says nothing at all about where you go, who notices when you stop coming, or who sits with you when someone you love dies. Belief without a room around it asks a great deal of a person, and it asks it quietly, every week.
There is a cost, too, in continuing to attend places that can only hold a trimmed-down version of you. You learn to edit. Do not mention what sits on your windowsill. Do not ask the question that makes the room go still. Do not say that you left the faith you were raised in and miss it anyway. Editing yourself week after week is tiring, and however long you keep at it, it never quite turns into belonging.
What an open room requires
The Pagan Church of Christ is young. It was founded in 2026, it has no building of its own, and it meets in rented and borrowed rooms. The time and place go out by email rather than being posted publicly, so that anyone still working things out can come without announcing it. What is held to is plain and steady: a gathering each week, a circle each month, and a study midweek.
A room where questions are not treated as a threat is not a mood. It is a practice, and it has a price: the rent on the space, and the unhurried work of tending to people. That is what giving pays for here, and nothing more elaborate than that. A door that stays open on a known day, for the next person who has been looking a long time.
