What was edited out
The sacred has worn a feminine face in most places where people have worshipped. She appears as mother and as midwife, as the one who grieves, as wisdom spoken of in the feminine, as the ground itself and the harvest it gives back. Sometimes she carried a name and a season of her own. Sometimes she was quieter than that: a presence in the rites of the household, the blessing said over bread, the prayers women taught their daughters that nobody thought to write down.
What happened to her was less a conspiracy than a long habit of editing. The rites that got recorded were mostly the public ones, and public life belonged mostly to men. Translations narrowed. Councils tidied. Devotions that lived in kitchens and at bedsides were filed away as folk custom rather than theology, and folk custom is what gets left out when a tradition writes itself down. What survived is real. It is also a partial account.
Which is why you can be raised inside a tradition and still feel an absence in it you could not name. Not hostility, necessarily. Just the sense that the divine had been given one face, that it was never quite yours, and that no one around you seemed to count this as a loss.
What a circle does
A circle is a shape, and the shape does particular work. In a room arranged in rows, attention travels forward toward whoever is speaking, and most people stay quiet for the whole of it. In a circle there is no front. Attention moves around, everyone can see everyone, and the expectation is that you will say something rather than watch. Things get spoken in that arrangement that would never be said to a room: about bodies, grief, exhaustion, the parts of a life that go unmentioned in general company.
That is also why voice and leadership here are not a courtesy extended to women. A gathering built around the feminine sacred that keeps women as its audience has misunderstood its own subject. The people in the circle are the ones who shape what it becomes.
Holding gatherings like these takes very little glamour and a fairly steady amount of money. The church is young and small and has no building of its own, so every gathering happens in a rented or borrowed room. Giving is what keeps that room available and the circle meeting.
